FIGHTING FACTIONS:

1964-present: Marxist groups called Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), supported by the National Liberation Army (ELN) against the Government backed by paramilitary forces

CASUALTIES: More than 120, 000 deaths

WEAPONS SUPPLIERS: The Colombian army is provided with weapons by the US, Spanish and German Government. Guerilla armies are getting their weapons on the black market with money from the drugtrade. The Government army is the main weapons provider to the paramilitary forces.

PRESENT SITUATION: The Colombian population and human right supporters face complete instability. Between June 2000 and June 2001 20 people a day died or disappeared for political reasons. 80% of them victims of paramilitary forces, 20% of guerillas. In 2001 more than 300,000 people were forced to leave their homes because of this increasing violence. The majority were women and children, native or Afro-Colombian, the so-called “campesinos”. In the same year 14 human rights supporters and 164 trade union supporters were killed, while many other people had to leave the country after death threats. In 2002 this situation became worse, due to the breach of the peace process between government and FARC (Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces). The risk of a war against guerillas on all fronts is starting to frighten all the population and there are continuous reports of lots of human rights supporter disappearances.
